Dhaka expresses concern over deteriorating situation in Rakhain State of Myanmar

The government yesterday summoned Ambassador of Myanmar to Dhaka Myo Myint Than and expressed its deep concern over the continued deteriorating situation in the Rakhine State of Myanmar due to ongoing actions of its Armed Forces.

Secretary (Bilateral and Consular) Kamrul Ahsan handed over a note verbal to the Myanmar envoy in a meeting held at foreign ministry this afternoon to this end, according to foreign ministry sources.

During the meeting, Ahsan informed the Ambassador that desperate people from the Rakhine State are entering into Bangladesh due to humanitarian situation seeking safety and shelter across borders.

He said that thousands of distressed Myanmar citizens including women, children and elderly people continue to cross border into Bangladesh despite Border Guard’s sincere effort to prevent the influx.

“Thousands more have been reported to be gathering at the border crossing,” he added.

Ahsan requested Myanmar to assist Bangladesh to ensure the integrity of its border to prevent influx of people from Rakhine State into Bangladesh.

He protested against the tendency in the Myanmar media seeking to implicate Bangladesh into the incidents in Myanmar.

Secretary (Bilateral & Consular) urged Myanmar to give due consideration to the demand from international community to conduct impartial investigation of the alleged indiscriminate and disproportionate use of force and human rights violation during the ongoing military operation in the Rakhine State.

He stressed that rule of law and due judicial process should be allowed to function without let or hindrance.

He requested the envoy to request his government to take urgent appropriate measures so that Muslim minorities in the Rakhine State are not forced to seek shelter across the border.

He urged Myanmar to take urgent measures to bring back normalcy in the Rakhine State so that those who have already been crossed and those who are waiting to cross the border along with the internally displaced people can return to their villages without fear and with safety and dignity to pursue their normal life.
